Regulatory Specialist

A large commercial company is seeking a Regulatory Specialist (Economist or Lawyer), to work on regulatory and legal matters as required. 

The role holder will provide pragmatic, timely and commercially focused legal and regulatory advice for all areas of the business, covering:

  • Formulating appropriate regulatory strategies that are supportive of and consistent with the overall strategic direction of the businesses
  • Advising on implications of specific regulatory risks and opportunities, including making recommendations on best courses of action that take full account of the company’s commercial objectives
  • Active engagement with relevant regulatory bodies and Governments, including negotiations for Licence renewals and spectrum applications
  • Providing regulatory and legal compliance training to all staff where appropriate 
  • Supporting negotiations with the company’s competitors and wholesale customers in relation to requests for interconnection and wholesale products. 

In addition, and depending on whether the postholder holds a professional legal qualification, there could be a requirement to provide legal advice on: 

  • Contractual issues between the company and its suppliers and customers;
  • Advising on retail law, consumer rights and disputes;
  • Advising on relevant laws relating to advertising, promotions, marketing and events

The desirable candidate will have previous experience of working within a relevant regulated environment  (ideally in electricity, broadcasting etc ) or experience with working for a regulator for a relevant industry sector.  They will also have significant (at least 5 years) practical experience of working in a relevant role in a regulated environment as a regulatory specialist. Likely to be have been gained as either a regulatory economist (holding a post-graduate economics degree), or a regulatory lawyer (with a professional qualification as a lawyer ideally from the UK, Guernsey, Jersey, or Isle of Man), or possibly as a regulatory-focussed Accountant.
