Recruiting During Lockdown

For many Guernsey businesses, Coronavirus has brought recruitment to a standstill, but certainly not all! Recruiting is done in different way now. At Situations we’re all working from home and we’re constantly using Microsoft Teams, Skype, Zoom, etc. to register new candidates and have team meetings.

Our clients are doing the same; interviews are still happening for every job level, just in a different way these days. First, second and third stage interviews are being conducted by video call and job offers are going out without the employer or candidate ever having met, but successful staff placements are still being made. Companies are adapting to the current situation and carrying on with their resourcing needs in more flexible ways.
Once onboard, inductions and training are being undertaken over the internet and by video to new staff in their own homes.

Organisations need to be flexible to keep their businesses going under lockdown and maintain their quality of customer service by ensuring sufficient staffing levels to get all of the work done and to avoid existing staff from being placed under too much stress.

Temps and contractors are being used quite widely at present because not every organisation can commit to taking on a permanent staff member in these difficult financial times, as they don’t necessarily know when things might pick up again and what the future income levels of their business might be.

But companies please note, most permanent candidates are currently on a 3-month notice period and hopefully by that time we’ll be well on the way to economic recovery and businesses will need a full complement of staff in place ready to manage workloads, so there’s no need to take that recruitment pause.
